Help! What’s the Perfect Eco-Friendly Valentine's Gift?

Will here, and I need your help.

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, the pressure is on to find the perfect romantic gift that's also green.

I've been racking my brain, trying to figure out the ideal present for my Valentine. But in this age of climate crisis, I want to make sure that whatever I choose doesn't just express my love for her but also for the Planet.

VALENTINES DAY DILEMMA: ROSES VS. CHOCOLATE

Picture this: I'm standing in the aisle of a store, surrounded by a sea of red roses and decadent chocolates. Here's my thinking...

What’s the Environmental Impact of Roses?

A bouquet of roses is THE classic romantic gesture, right? Did you know that Canadians import a whopping 150 million roses from Colombia every Valentine's Day?

But then, I'm hit with the sobering reality of the carbon footprint associated with each bloom. That's right, each delicate flower comes with a hefty dose of CO2 emissions, equivalent to thousands of cars running nonstop — for an entire year!

How Does Chocolate Impact the Environment?

Then, there's the allure of chocolate, with its rich, indulgent flavours. Even though it's wrapped in single-use plastic (another topic for another post!)...

Behind every sweet treat lies a dark truth. The chocolate industry, particularly in West Africa where two-thirds of the world's cocoa is produced, is tied to rampant deforestation.

It's heartbreaking to think that the box of chocolates you might give to your Valentine contributes to the destruction of precious tropical forests.

The Amazon alone absorbs as much as 2 billion tons of carbon dioxide every year, about 5 percent of annual emissions from human activities. Deforestation accounts for 10 percent of annual carbon dioxide emissions.

Candy companies like Mars — the creator of Snickers, M&Ms and Twix — have vowed to make their products with sustainable cocoa. A Mars spokesman says the company will ensure all its cocoa is responsibly sourced and traceable by 2025.

ETHICAL & SUSTAINABLE VALENTINES DAY GIFTS

As we grapple with this decision, I can't help but reflect on my own journey towards environmental awareness.

Growing up, I never gave much thought to the impact of my consumer choices. But as I've become more informed about the interconnectedness of our actions and the health of our planet, I've realized the importance of making sustainable choices, even in matters of the heart 💚
